Of Korea and Essex

On 25 June 1950, forces of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) crossed the 38th parallel into the Republic of Korea (South Korea) and the Korean War started.  If you are a history buff, you may remember reading about the Punsan Perimeter, Inchon Landings and the Chosin Reservoir.  During this time the world was worried because the USSR had exploded an atomic bomb 29 August 1949.

Dad had a tour of duty in South Korea many Dog Moons before I was born.  He later met a very nice Lady that had been a child refugee.  Her family had escaped from the north and entered south Korea.  Dad can't remember if it was before or during the War.  The Koreans he has met have been noble people.

According to Dog Dad, his college room mates father was an aviator aboard the Essex during the Korean War. We all know that I was named after Essexmas which dogs celebrated every 25th of December.

Lady Liberty

Today, we set the WABAC machine to 19 June 1885, destination Bedloe’s Island, New York, 127 years ago.  When we got there we watched the French frigate Isere sail into the harbor.  Dad tells us that aboard the Isere are 241 crates, that contain the Statue of Liberty.  When the pieces are assembled the statue is 151 feet tall.  What we see in the boxes is not the familiar green giant of today, but a shiny copper version.  You see the statue is made from copper sheets.  Over time copper will oxidize to the green color we are used to seeing.

The statue makes us think of Grand Paw seeing the statue on his way to Europe to fight in WW II, and then again when he returned home from the war.  We think of our pal Asta, gazing on the statue so many times when her pack lived in New York City. 

I Wonder What Shape A Dog Would Have Chosen

We sat back and wondered what the statue would have looked like if the dogs of New York City would have designed it.  Somehow, we think the shape would have been far different than it is today.  The collies think most of you pups can guess what shape we think it would have been.

Three on a Palm Frond

We all had good time at Angel Paws the last several days.  The weather has been pawsome, due to a grrreat breeze.  Sherman especially had a good time Friday playing with a palm frond.  Sherman was wondering if the old dogs tail from World War I is true.  Is Three on a Palm Frond bad luck or was it something else?

Happy Pawthers Day to all you Paws out there.  We hope you all have a great one.  Our thoughts are with Grand-Paw and Dog Dad.  Here are some old pawtographs from many dog moons ago.

It is Dog Dad's second Pawthers day without Grand-Paw and we know Dog Dad misses him.  Grand Paw was a good man.  He taught Dad a lot of things along the way, like how to drive a car and read the comics.   We are glad that he taught him so many things.  The two of us are huddling around Dog Dad and give him a face lick.

Hot June Days

Well, the weather is warm at Angel Paws.  We don't chase near as much as we did earlier in the year when it was cooler.  Sherman plays for a short while, then plops in front of the water bowl.

Essex saves energy by finding a shady spot to lie down, while waiting for an evil golf cart or bicycle to cross the fence line.

Dog Dad doesn't feel like doing much either.  Dad did make Cheddar Collies for Sherman's barkday.  Unfortunately hardly anyone was at the park that day.

Sherman is One

I awoke today to Dog Dad singing Happy Barkday to me.  We went on our walk and he sang some more to me.  I'd be embarrassed but nobody is awake while we are walking.  So it is a day of silly songs, extra treats, extra hugs and filled with smiles.  I hope my brother Dakota is having a super barkday as well.

Above is the first picture of me that Dog Dad received from Lil.  I sure was a cute little rascal.   Well, Dog Dad is off to work, but he'll be thinking of me and Great Auntie Essex all day.  Oh, my ears are doing well as the medicine is killing off those ear mites.

Ear Mites

The results of my visit, ear mites.  Bowsers, that sounded like no fun.  Doc told us that is very common in Key West, and he was amazed that Essex and Deacon never had them.  Dad caught the mites fairly early, so no infection.

Doc gave Dad ear drops for me and Great Auntie Essex.  I get two applications for the first week, then twice a week the next two weeks.  Great Auntie Essex just gets the drops twice a week for two weeks, because she didn't have them little critters. 

Dad put some drops in this evening and has noticed that I'm not shaking my head as much.  Probably because those mites aren't bothering me.  The following link talks about ear mites: http://www.petmd.com/dog/conditions/infectious-parasitic/c_dg_ear_mites.
