Deacon crossed the rainbow bridge today at around 6:20 PM.
Dad was on the phone with Uncle Steve. Deacon had his front paws on his dog crate and was looking out the window barking at a dog outside. Dad is guessing about all this but Deacon did that a lot. Next thing we hears a crash and a yelp. He rushes around the corner and sees Deacon laying on the ground, a pool of urine and hears a several low whimpers. He tells Uncle Steve, Deacon is hurt and hangs up the phone. He caresses his head tells him to stay strong. He calls the vet and they give him the number for the 24 hour vet up the Key.
Deacon has already crossed
By the time Dad and Frank get Deacon in the car, Dad thinks he has already crossed the bridge. Frank does too, but doesn't want to bring it up. Dad is hoping Deacon is in shock and the vet can help him. I ride up with a worried Dog Dad and try to console him. When we get to the 24 hour vet, she confirms mine and Dog Dad's fears.Heaven has gained one heck of a dog. We can imagine Deacon up there licking Grand Paw and Grand Maw in the face.
Dog Speed Nephew,
Essex

I've been following your blog for awhile now. I am so very sorry that your sweet Deacon is gone. I cried as I read what happened to him. I hope with all my heart that he didn't really suffer. He is with all your loved ones who have crossed over and he is healthy and young again. But I know the pain in your heart will be there forever and you will miss him always. Hugs and prayers from Duffy and I in Canada.
What a horrible thing to happen to your handsome Deacon. We can only imagine the pain you are going through after such a horrible shock. Sending a hug and a prayer.
I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. I'm sure Sweet Praline is greeting him at the bridge and showing him around her palace. She just went to the bridge a short 4 weeks ago.
I grew up with a collie and loved him dearly. My thoughts are with you.
Mom Paula
Run free beautiful boy - you have earned your angel wings.

Jan of Jan's Funny Farm noted this on the Cat Blogosphere and we came to offer our condolences. We can't express how sorry we are...Our human mom lost her first adoptee suddenly one night from a blood clot and there aren't words to describe the shock.
Please, please know we're sending you all soft purrs and universal healing Light, wishing you Peace and Blessings.
Dear Essex and your humans,
I am new to DWB, and I heard about your sad sad news. It is a very horrible shock when our loved furry family members make their Journey to Rainbow Bridge, but especially so when it is so unexpected. Our beloved Neve made her Journey at the end of April after a short battle with cancer, and I am sure she is now there healthy & free as is your Decon.
Annie (& Ruger the ACD)
We're sending all our love to you to help you through this difficult time. Poor Deacon must have been surprised when he got the call to the Rainbow Bridge so suddenly, but he is running free now. Most likely they needed a good herding dog urgently to manage all the silly little pups up there. He is watching over you now.

We will miss Deacon very much - he was one great dog and we all loved him, even if we only knew him on the aether. Greet my Charlie and Higgins when you get there old buddy and tell them to wait for me cause I'll be there.

Sending hugs and prayers for Deacon. We pray for the whole family and are sad here as well.
It sounds as if it was sudden and hopefully without suffering. Perhaps the whimpers were that he knew he did not have time to say goodbye.
Deacon will be watching over you and you will be together again.
Me and my cat Charlie came over from the CB. We are so so sorry about beautiful Deacon. How awful! Such a handsome boy. We are truly sorry.
Take care

Geez, Joe -- I've been away and was just scrolling through to see what I missed -- but never would I have expected this. How devastating! Words can't express how awful I feel for you. Deacon was such a beautiful collie and loyal fun-loving companion. Essex must be so confused as well. Have you figured out what happened?

I just read of Deacon's passing on the Cat Blogosphere's sight. I stopped blogging after I lost my cat Tyler. I'm in tears now reliving the grief of losing a pet. I'm so sorry that you lost your boy. It must be terrible because of how suddenly he crossed over. I hope sweet memories bring you happiness.
I'm so sorry to hear the news! I am sending all my puppy thoughts and prayers your way.
Woofs & hugs,

Oh my goodness, this is tragic. I am SO sorry for your loss. Poor Deacon. My sincerest condolences to you & your family.
I heard about Deacon on Dawn King's blog and had to come here to offer my sympathy. I can only imagine your shock and pain. One never wants their dog to be in the list of unusual ways in which our canine partners leave us, but no matter what it was, it's always, always too soon--and it could've been something inside, too, not visible, that just happened to happen, aneurysm or rupture or who knows what, and it was just his time. He was obviously lucky to have found a new home with people who appreciated him even if he did want to jump up to show his enthusiasm.
I'm late in writing, but know that you and dogdad know how dogmom and I feel. We are grieving for you, too. Stay strong, delight in the memories of goofyness and we hope Deacon and Gomer are chasing critters and having a ball over the bridge... and that they don't miss us as much as we miss them.
